34 miles to Mackinac
A quick cycle into town this morning then it was a ferry ride to Mackinac Island for the day. There is a bridge over the straits, which I have been told is 6 miles long and remains the world's longest suspension bridge. It was built in 1957 so it is the same age as me. Bicycles are not allowed So it is a ferry to the island, then a second ferry to Mackinac City, on the tip of the Michigan peninsular.
The island was packed with people, horses and bicycles- it does not allow cars Much busier than Windermere on bank holiday weekend. A lot of tourist shops, fudge shops, cafes, and the like. Actually very nice. There are horse drawn carriages if you want to take one. Lots of colonial style buildings. Some hotels, though not for the likes of me! No camp site.
Bicycles are everywhere, and lots of places renting them out. It is 8 miles on a circular road round the island. At mile 2 you can hear some children (and adults) start to get tetchy and many turn back! But it is great to see those that remain cycling. One little Chinese girl on a little pink bike was giving it her all; you could see the smile on her face.
Spent the day relaxing, cycling around the island and visiting some of the view points.
Could not find a grocery store in Mackinac, so had a pizza out. The people at the table next to me left most of their meal. I ate every scrap of mine!
